Gary Short is a freelance photographer based near Dolgellau in
Snowdonia, where he has lived since 2003. He was born in Somerset and has
worked as a graphic designer for over 20 years having been employed at two UK
National Park Authorities, including the Peak District in Derbyshire and, more
recently, 7 years at the Brecon Beacons National Park.
always had a keen interest in photography as well as art, wildlife and
conservation, having trained in design at the Arts University in Dorset,
specialising in natural history illustration.
I combined my artistic skills and love of the outdoors through working for
National Parks and in addition I have also worked for Natural Resources Wales
and Aberystwyth University. Numerous artists and illustrators have inspired me
throughout my career, especially Charles Tunnicliffe, Sir Kyffin Williams and
purchased my first Minolta film camera in the late 1980's and have now been
using digital SLR cameras and lenses for a number of years. This developed into
a more intensive occupation and career move when I set up my own photography business
Wales and particularly Snowdonia National Park, has an amazing variety of
landscapes, from the rugged mountains to the dynamic dramatic coastline, so I
feel very privileged to live in such an awe inspiring area. There is a wide
mixture of habitats, wildlife and textures with fast flowing rivers and
streams, heather-clad moors and heathland, desolate sandy beaches and abundant
The ever changing light creates a wonderful spectacle and abundance of subject
matter for the landscape photographer. There are also many attractive towns and
villages, close-knit rural and farming communities and a fascinating culture,
history and geology.
I enjoy creative photography and the challenge of portraying the beauty of the
natural world in all weathers is very rewarding as no two days are the same.
Waiting for sunset on a high windswept mountain top after a two hour walk and
trying to second-guess the light and prevailing conditions requires patience
and perseverance - but the elation of capturing that fleeting moment is hard to
